TCM Approach for Constipation Treatment
Constipation is a disorder of gastrointestinal motility where stool remains in the large intestine, leading to the reabsorption of toxins and water, which then recirculate through the body. Occasional constipation may only cause bloating or discomfort, but chronic constipation can lead to fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, heaviness in the head, headaches, shoulder pain, irritability, poor appetite, and other symptoms. This can negatively impact the brain and other organs.
For individuals with hypertension, coronary artery disease, or cerebral arteriosclerosis, straining during bowel movements can even lead to complications like brain hemorrhage or heart attacks.
Cause of Constipation
To address constipation, it is essential to understand why it occurs. It’s similar to a boat moving along a river, which requires two main conditions: (1) water in the river, and (2) power to propel the boat forward.
Constipation arises from two primary causes:
Lack of lubricating fluids in the intestines.
Insufficient propelling force, or a blockage that hinders stool movement.
This points to the treatment methods:
Replenish the intestine’s lubricating fluids.
Help “push” the intestines.
Common TCM Approaches to Address Constipation:
1. Constipation Due to Lack of Fluids
Heat Constipation: Caused by dryness and heat in the large intestine that depletes fluids, leading to hard stools. It is common in older adults, children, and people with yin-deficient constitutions.
2. Constipation Due to Lack of Propulsion
Qi Stagnation Constipation: Caused by blocked intestinal energy, often due to emotional factors.
Deficiency Constipation: Caused by insufficient pushing force in the large intestine. Symptoms include extended time and difficulty in the bathroom, along with fatigue after bowel movements—hallmarks of deficiency constipation.
